No visitors. No nights spent away from the apartment. No disturbing the other residents, all of whom are rich or famous or both. These are the only rules for Jules Larsen's new job as an apartment sitter at the Bartholomew, one of Manhattan's most high-profile and mysterious buildings. Recently heartbroken and just plain broke, Jules is taken in by the splendor of her surroundings and accepts the terms, ready to leave her past life behind.
As she gets to know the residents and staff of the Bartholomew, Jules finds herself drawn to fellow apartment sitter Ingrid, who comfortingly, disturbingly reminds her of the sister she lost eight years ago. When Ingrid confides that the Bartholomew is not what it seems and the dark history hidden beneath its gleaming facade is starting to frighten her, Jules brushes it off as a harmless ghost story—until the next day, when Ingrid disappears.
Searching for the truth about Ingrid's disappearance, Jules digs deeper into the Bartholomew's dark past and into the secrets kept within its walls. Her discovery that Ingrid is not the first apartment sitter to go missing at the Bartholomew pits Jules against the clock as she races to unmask a killer, expose the building's hidden past, and escape the Bartholomew before her temporary status becomes permanent.
✮ My Review ✮
This is a book I read one on the Pigeonhole app but I couldn’t keep up daily so I managed to read it in my own time.
It is my first outing with Mr Sager and I was eager to read this because I had heard so many awesome things about him, but I didn’t love this book as much I really wanted to. Don’t get me wrong I did enjoy it, there is a mystery to solve but I found the ending a bit flat.
I loved the build-up to the final events. You have Jules, a home sitter in an exclusive building which also just happens to be the place where her favourite book was written, what are the chances!
As a house sitter, she has rules to follow, random rules, not sure I could follow them. Yet she needs the money so she agrees. Then she learns of other tenants “disappearing” suddenly….then her friend Ingrid disappears. Working against the clock and with a handsome doctor, Jules sets on a path which could be her very last if she’s not careful.
One thing that I will admit that completely freaked me out were any scenes with the dumbwaiter! Especially when someone is dumb enough to go into the dumbwaiter, I will admit I might have been holding my breath then! ??
Lock Every Door starts off slow to build momentum and tension. I didn’t have the foggiest to where the story was going to, would it be supernatural or would it be something much more real and sinister?! I am also happy to say I didn’t have a clue to how this would end and I was on the edge of my seat to find out…I was just disappointed by the reveal. I personally just felt that there was room for so much more but that is just me.
Lock Every Door is a cleverly written book, one that will tease you and it draws out emotions from you. It will definitely keep you guessing until the very VERY end.
Until next time xxx
