The Carls just appeared. Coming home from work at three a.m., twenty-three-year-old April May stumbles across a giant sculpture. Delighted by its appearance and craftsmanship--like a ten-foot-tall Transformer wearing a suit of samurai armor--April and her friend Andy make a video with it, which Andy uploads to YouTube. The next day April wakes up to a viral video and a new life. News quickly spreads that there are Carls in dozens of cities around the world--everywhere from Beijing to Buenos Aires--and April, as their first documentarian, finds herself at the center of an intense international media spotlight.
Now April has to deal with the pressure on her relationships, her identity, and her safety that this new position brings, all while being on the front lines of the quest to find out not just what the Carls are, but what they want from us.
Well, where do I start with this review?? How would you be if one day you became a celebrity? And what if that fame came at a price? What are the Carls?
April, our main character is an unlikeable likeable character. You see a confidence ‘loved’ girl, slowly have everything stripped from her and watching opportunities leave her. The book focuses a lot on fame and how becoming a “celebrity” can affect someone, especially as quickly as April becomes one, albeit with some decisions she made on her journey. The journey is not always a positive one and it is how you cope is where the story lies. April also needs to learn some manners!
I do not normally read sci-fi books but this book was a joy to read out of my norm. It takes you on such an adventure, there are lots of twists and turns and the constant figuring out what was going on with the Carls.
And then the ending…….well thank god it is the first book in the series because quite frankly I am not sure I am happy with what Mr Green did….he created more questions!!!! Ones where the answers have not been resolved and they need to be! Quicksmart!
I know this review is brief, but this book is hard to review, not that this is a bad thing, you are taken on a journey where everyone will view this book differently and interpret the plot differently. It is a book where just one more chapter line is used, as you find yourself engrossed in because you can not always quite believe what is going on.
Until next time xx
Thanks to Tracy at Compulsive Readers for the tour invite and the author for a copy of their book in return for my honest and unbiased review
