‘Don’t you agree Detective? That some people deserve to die? I’ve killed the first. I’ve killed the second. Now will you catch the others, or do I have to kill them too?’
The body of Amos Price lies in a pool of blood on the polished floor of an otherwise empty house. With no signs of a break in, and no clues left at the scene, Detective Jenna Alton is at a loss.
But as the team begins to unpick the life of the reclusive victim, they discover a disturbing link between Amos and the disappearance of several young girls in the county going back years.
Days later, another brutally murdered body is found, in a remote motel on the outskirts of town. Ely Dorsey was killed in a frenzied attack and Jenna fears not only that the murders are connected to the missing girls, but that the killer hasn’t finished yet.
As Jenna tries to work out who will be next, the killer suddenly starts sending her deputy, David Kane, messages. Is she being taunted? Or does the murderer want to be caught? And will Jenna discover who’s behind these killings before more people die?
This was the most disturbing of cases for Kane and Alton and one which was horrifying to listen to. (I have issued a content warning on this one, due to the nature of the story) I can however safely say, I guessed the killer straight away!! Yay me, but I still loved that there were still a few red herrings thrown my way to try and throw me off the scent but I was determined to not be
This was harrowing, and it was the first time where you want the killer to get away with the murders, why well you need to find
Although, what the killer is 100% justified, I do not think anyone could deny that
It was great to be back with the team and seeing where they were in their lives, although the whole police team seem to take a backseat in this story. I loved the two new additions to the team, and hope to see more of them soon. This story felt like it was more the killer’s story and the justifications of why they were doing what they were doing. I enjoy as always though, the police procedural part, as you watch them working together to solve these murders and it is always intriguing to see how police minds work.
I love this series! I love Kane and Alton, still pining for them to have a romantic interest but equally happy they don’t. Their friendship is a beacon of light, in their dark lives and I love in their downtime they watch rom-com’s together. I actually 100% adore Wolfe and Rawley, they are both such endearing characters. So much for relocating to a sleepy quiet town, and even though there are loads of murders, if I could, I would LOVE to go to Black Rock Falls.
I think the writing is sublime, and I adore how D.K Hood sets each scene for you. I could picture the funfairs, the lodges and unfortunately the more harrowing events. Check out my reviews of Don’t Tell a Soul and Bring Me
I have to shout out to the narrator, Patricia Rodriguez, I thought she did a fantastic job and loved all the voices she did in this novel, kept me hooked all the way through.
I am so glad I have caught up with the series too as I can now enjoy book 4.
