Jenny Crawford has resigned herself to a loveless marriage living hand to mouth with their two children. Like many others, husband Roy struggles to find work at the docks but a chance encounter turns his outlook and the family's fortunes around. Not only does he get regular work but they are also allocated a council house on Coronation Close on the outskirts of the city. Jenny and the children are overjoyed, this is the fresh start she could only ever dream of.
But trouble feels never too far away. With Roy spending more time with Sir Oswald Molsey bullying black shirts, Jenny is left to her own devices and eager to fit in begins to make new friends.
Thankful of peace, Jenny has her head turned firstly by an old love and then by her knight in shining armour.
Does she allow herself to fall in love with either of these?
Whatever happens the consequences could be dire if Roy ever finds out.
I have to start off by offering my apologies to the author and publisher and Rachel, due to some chronic migraines, this will not be a full review today as I’ve not quite finished the book but when I do it will be up.
My first thoughts of this book are just wow. I don’t normally read this genre but I loved the sound of it so I thought, why not? Why not indeed! I know I’m not that far in but boy oh boy am I already feeling fiercely protective over Jenny and her two champions of girls. These three are strong women who unfortunately are in the life of an awful man.
I have to say, I knew that life was tougher back in the day but I had no idea how bad. I mean just the sleeping arrangements, and the bed bugs on Tilly and Gloria, well it made me realise how lucky we have it but also my heart broke for them for how hard it was for them. They were living hand to mouth and the purse strings were down to the “man” of the house. I don’t think he was much of a man.
Life is difficult, no sugar coating it but the small interactions with other people see Jenny coming out of her shell and come to life and I loved that! I loved seeing this meek woman turning in some kind of sunshine when he wasn’t around.
As I say I haven’t finished it but I am hooked on Jenny and her story and I can’t wait to be able to finish it. Lizzie has written a gem of a book and I adore it already.
Until the next time xxx
My thanks to Rachel at Rachel’s Random Resources for the tour invite and the Publisher and Author for a copy of the book in return for my honest and unbiased review.
