From author Gilly Macmillan comes this original, chilling and twisty mystery about two shocking murder cases twenty years apart, and the threads that bind them.
Twenty years ago, eleven-year-olds Charlie Paige and Scott Ashby were murdered in the city of Bristol, their bodies dumped near a dog racing track. A man was convicted of the brutal crime, but decades later, questions still linger.
For his whole life, filmmaker Cody Swift has been haunted by the deaths of his childhood best friends. The loose ends of the police investigation consume him so much that he decides to return to Bristol in search of answers. Hoping to uncover new evidence, and to encourage those who may be keeping long-buried secrets to speak up, Cody starts a podcast to record his findings. But there are many people who don’t want the case—along with old wounds—reopened so many years after the tragedy, especially Charlie’s mother, Jess, who decides to take matters into her own hands.
When a long-dead body is found in the same location the boys were left decades before, the disturbing discovery launches another murder investigation. Now Detective John Fletcher, the investigator on the original case, must reopen his dusty files and decide if the two murders are linked. With his career at risk, the clock is ticking and lives are in jeopardy…
Wow, just finished this book and it took me far too long to read this what with work, tour books, and just life! However, I knuckled down and I finally finished it, man it was awesome!
I love the way that we are revisiting an old case. One that has affected Cody Swift who hosts a podcast. He’s now taken it upon himself to take a look back at the murder of his two friends. We then have a body that has been discovered and now we have two cases flowing through this book.
We have so much going on, we have Cody revisiting the past with the day that led up to the fateful day, we have the case from the viewpoint of Detective Fletcher and his partner Danny. We then have the present day with Cody and his podcast and then the present day with Fletcher under pressure with the murder being revisited and the body! Not only that, we are “investigating” Jessica too, the mum of Charlie one of the poor boys that had been murdered. We learn of her in the past and then the present day and her secret. Everything was done so well and cleverly and I LOVED IT!
That ending, oh my days, that is not expecting that all! Not the resolution I was expecting! It was shocking and it made me gasp! I couldn’t believe it was the end! There are most definitely threads that are not tied, and the true villain in my eyes, well untouchable is all I can say. There are always things you think about after the fact, and I have many questions I need answering. On one hand, I loved elements of it, on the other hand, I wanted more.
The way the story is told breaks up from past to present it. It held my attention. The writing was brilliant in the fact that you had this heartbreaking story and no matter what the outcome is, it’s not going to be an easy one. It’s just not one that you would expect
I can’t believe it took me so long to finish it! It was so addictive! When I picked it back up I couldn’t put it down again and blitz it! I was completely riveted to the spot with it. The only good thing about taking so long is that I now have more books to read by the author! I can’t wait!
Until the next time xxx
