Welcome to DaltonHome to Humans, Dwarves, Elves and the shadowy Umbral Populace.
Detective Vanic Bradley works hard to keep the peace, coming down hard on the criminal underbelly of the city.
After putting his life on the line multiple times in recent weeks, all he wanted was a day off work to spend time with his son, and re-evaluate his place in the world - but forces beyond his control have other ideas.
For reasons unknown, he will find himself in a race against time as two hundred innocent citizens become collateral damage in a murderous plot centred around him.
Umbrate is the debut Urban Fantasy crime thriller by A.D Jones, that will offer up his take on a fantasy setting that should be welcomed by many readers, regardless of their genre tastes.
Goddamn, I love this book! I have been reading more and more fantasy and urban fantasy books, and god this is awesome!! A brand new world where all people and species live side by side. Of course, it’s not without its prejudice in this world. I have to say a dwarf and elf working together – I see what you did there Mr Jones! Me likey!
Generally with fight scenes in books, I struggle to sometimes to visualise things in my head, here, however, it’s all very explicit and I saw the fights play out in my mind. Probably not always a good thing. The opening to this book is something I want to find out more about, it was exciting and terrifying but there isn’t much more in the story that links it. I hope this is expanded upon in the next book, I mean there is a new book… isn’t there? I want to know more about the Umbrals and how everything went dark for them!
I devoured this book at a slow pace because I didn’t want to rush any page. I wanted to be with Vanic every step of the way. I loved his personal growth but also his actual journey in this book. It was so intense when the doors began to shut and you have an unseen threat causing havoc and panic.
This is such a riveting read, it’s a crime thriller at heart but it has the fantasy side which I have started to appreciate more. I think with more books like this, I might just be a fantasy girl after all.
Until the next time xxx
