"Ascher's latest is a fantasy romance that has everything nice—a hot love interest, a relatable main character, female friendship—and plenty of (consensual) spice." ―Booklist
Some follow their destiny.Others fall for it.
For humans, Salizar’s is a place of mystery and wonder. For Harrow, it’s a place to hide from those who slaughtered her entire clan. A haven where she can disguise both her abilities and who she really is.
Until he arrives.
He has no recollection of who—or even what—he is. He only knows that he’s a monster, with wings and powerful abilities never seen before. But beneath the layers of rage and isolation, one glimpse into those inky black eyes reveals a soul that calls out to the loneliness in Harrow.
And so she chooses him.
She is drawn to the mystery of him, her unquenchable need for his kiss. And as powerful enemies align and conspire against them, Harrow knows their only hope is escape.
Now, with every secret she unlocks from his past, a shadow from her own whispers free—luring enemies who will stop at nothing to get their final revenge on Harrow. And she’s given them the perfect weapon…because her winged beast is not what he seems.
But maybe it’s time they finally learn—neither is she.
I have realised lately that I am loving, loving, loving fantasy books. Something really draws me, the rich surroundings, the world-building, the exotic names, this book has it all.
I chose to listen to the audiobook, as I do love me an audiobook, the narrator is superb! But not going to lie, it took me a while to get into. There was a lot of information to get my head around, and I got confused. At times there was a lot to get bogged down in trying to figure out who was who and doing what sometimes. This is probably because I was listening to the book, and if you miss a bit of the book you might get lost. But the writing is fantastic.
I loved the story of Harrow and Raith, and who they were and who they became. I loved learning about them and their races. So much building with it all, so much to learn and I feel we still have so much to learn.
There are a few twists and turns, which you expect, but we have the backstabbing, the fighting, and the self-discovery for the characters. It feels like the first in a planned series. There are a lot of unanswered questions and so much more to come. Plus I feel like Malaikah (I love this name!) has a big story arc coming too! I just wish we knew more about it!! Eeek.
I was hoping to see more about the circus after reading the blurb, but that felt more way way in the background. The characters were the driving force against the lavish backgrounds.
One thing I had to keep reminding myself is that Harrow is not some young naive little girl, she is 60!!! I mean if I was having the sex she was at the age, I would be a happy lady! The tone of the book, however, does mislead you because you do forget…..and the sex!! Well, the sex in this book is graphic, I wasn’t expecting it. I was playing the audiobook and then a scene came on, and well my husband was in one room and the mini me was in another…and well they learned a lot about Raith’s shaft LOL.
I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next in the series and where we will go next!
Until the next time xxx
