Adopted at birth, for years Lu has secretly dreamt of finding her birth mother but childhood bullying has left her with a lack of confidence.

When a tragic accident changes her life forever it sets her on a mission to get in contact with her birth mother and find out the reasons behind her adoption.

When she tracks down her mother in Cornwall there is an emotional reunion and the pair begin to form a relationship.

But is everything as wonderful as it appears or has Lu walked into a nightmare?

Today, I am re-sharing my review of Another Mother, re-reading my review has bought back all the memories of the book. Yup, still totally love this batshit crazy ass book!

My Review

Jeez! That is one rollercoaster of a book. My brain is not sure how to function right now, I feel like I have been hurdling in the front seat of out of control rollercoaster. This book is all about the characters, not the action, not murder but the characters, and in it, there are only five main characters you need to focus on.

Lucinda, known as Lu, was adopted at birth and after a tragedy in the opening chapters of the books decides to hunt down her birth mother. But will it be a happy reunion?

Mellyn, Lu’s birth mother is the over the moon to have back in her life. But why is her behaviour so erratic and out of control?

Rosie, Lu’s best friend and confidant, but could there be more than meets the eye? And her mum Val, well god love her she was the sweetest! Adelaide, well I could not go without mentioning her, her strength and support and her eyebrows!

When you start the book, and the story unfolds I guessed how it was going to end…but although there was one twist I got straightaway I was not prepared for the second bigger twist to be thrown at me. I am not sure how I am meant to cope with this!

So many secrets are kept in this book, and secrets are the downfall for many people. I felt that I spent a lot of the book walking around on eggshells, I mean that is pretty crazy right, but I felt if I made a wrong move when reading it could be the catalyst for some of the inexplicable behaviour by one of the characters. The story was intense, I could not breathe, I could not justify the actions of said character. Something just did not sit quite right with me or as it turns out with them!

As mentioned this book is completely character driven, so you do have the day-to-day lives of the characters, but I loved this. The mundane drove the intensity and suspense in the book as you wait for the next explosion to happen, the next thread to unravel and shocking reveal to happen.

Amanda James is an author I have only discovered this year, and the two books I have read so far this year have been awesome. She sucks you into the idyllic world in Cornwall, she throws you smack bang in the middle of the drama and their lives and she makes you give a damn. She makes you scream at the crazy people and she makes you sit in a cold sweat as you worry about the other people! Wondering what did the people of Cornwall do wrong in a past life!

Ms James is an author that as soon as I see her name, I want the book. I love the book and I just can not get enough of her writing. I cannot wait for the next psychological thrilling ride I go on.

Until next time xxx

About Amanda James

Amanda has written since she was a child, but never imagined that her words would be published, given that she left school with no real qualifications of note apart from an A* in how to be a nuisance in class. Nevertheless, she returned to education when her daughter was five and eventually became a history teacher. Then in 2010, after many twists and turns, the dream of becoming a writer came true when her first short story was published. Amanda has written many short stories and has six novels currently published.

Amanda grew up in Sheffield but now has realised her lifelong dream of living in Cornwall and her writing is inspired every day by the dramatic coastline near her home. She has sketched out many stories in her head while walking the cliff paths. Three of her mystery/suspense novels are set there, Somewhere Beyond the Sea, Summer in Tintagel and the Behind the Lie. Rip Current is also set in Cornwall and will be published by Bloodhound Books in April 2018.

Amanda, known to many as Mandy, spends far more time than is good for her on social media and has turned procrastination to a fine art. She can also usually be found playing on the beach with her family, or walking the cliff paths planning her next book.
