What would you sacrifice for love?
When I first started the audiobook, it wasn’t clear what was going on and I didn’t find myself drawn into the story of Emily. A young girl with a crush. Then, then we meet Jack and suddenly something clicked and I was itching to find out more about him. Then Emily’s story started to take a turn and I was hooked. Frustratingly I didn’t get the time to devour this in one go but then I was glad to take my time with this book.
You lived each moment with Jack and Emily. You were there in the thick of it and despite their rocky starts (putting it so lightly) they had and they started to pave a future, one that was lit up and bright. Well until one day…
God, I was so angry about the outcome. It upset me but it just showed the true colours of this character, pure and unadulterated selflessness. Just always thinking of everyone else. Still doesn’t make it any easier to read though (Or listen!!).
This is my first time reading a book by Abbott and it was a good introduction. Her writing flowed and she tackled some dark subjects, nothing was gratuitous, it was all there for a reason.
The underlying and worrying thing about this book is that it could happen. With all that darkness that happens, you feel you could be reading a real-life story instead of a work of fiction. This is how Abbott has done amazing here because I felt I could be reading someone’s account of what happened.
Abbott has a way with characters and the portrayal of them. Emily is a happy go, lucky girl, just thinking of boys to living life on the streets, looking over her shoulder and just a quite timid girl. A far cry to who we met. Jack, well just is just trying to get himself sorted, not a bad boy, just a fall guy. The wrong place at the wrong time guy. I rooted for him from the start.
I will definitely pick up another book by Abbott, she wove a nice little tale around me. One that gave me hope and she didn’t disappoint.
Until next time xxx
