A gripping story of friendship and betrayal from international best-selling author Adele Parks
‘I invited her in… and she took everything.’
When Mel hears from a long-lost friend in need of help, she doesn’t hesitate to invite her to stay. Mel and Abi were best friends back in the day, sharing the highs and lows of student life, until Mel’s unplanned pregnancy made her drop out of her studies.
Now, seventeen years later, Mel and Abi’s lives couldn’t be more different. Mel is happily married, having raised her son on her own before meeting her husband, Ben. Now they share gorgeous girls and have a chaotic but happy family home, with three children.
Abi, meanwhile, followed her lover to LA for a glamorous life of parties, celebrity and indulgence. Everything was perfect, until she discovered her partner had been cheating on her. Seventeen years wasted, and nothing to show for it. So what Abi needs now is a true friend to lean on, to share her grief over a glass of wine, and to have some time to heal. And what better place than Mel’s house, with her lovely kids, and supportive husband…
This dark, unsettling tale of the reunion of long-lost friends is thoroughly gripping exploration of wanting what you can’t have, jealousy and revenge from Sunday Times bestseller Adele Parks.
Oh, my days if you want something different and so totally out there that saw the line and ran away waving, then this is for you.
I will admit I guessed a few twists in the storyline but I was doubting myself, because no, surely the author wouldn’t do that….oh but she did with bells on! I have to say this book was a lot of fun and a lot of oh my god no he/she didn’t!
I blasted my way through the audiobook for this. It was crazy addictive, such an outlandish story deserved my attention.
Mel and Abi, friends from the way-way back, one in need and now their friendship is back in the forefront. Chalk and cheese is the best description I can think of. Mel, the mum, the one with a happy life and marriage with a family. Abi, led a glamourous hi-life until she was betrayed by her partner. So, Mel, well to be honest. She needed such a big slap to wake up, she was just way OTT and completely fawning over Abi. I get that yes your best friend is back, but come on love. Calm down a bit. Ben, the voice of reason until he wasn’t, when he became a supporter, that was odd to me but well it worked. He came back to being that one sensible level headed person. Once Mel calmed down and the anger came out when then yes, I was totally rallying for her.
Ms Parks has created two women where you have such an opinion of them and their actions. They have been fleshed out that they could be your friend if you wanted them to be of course.
This is a whirlwind of a book and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride. The crazy thing about it all is, well it could happen and I wouldn’t be surprised if it has. I will be back for more by Ms Parks for sure. Now that I know what I am in for sure, I am going to lap up any books that come my way with her name on them.
I loved that Joanna Froggatt narrated this. It took a few beats to get into as the audiobook had random pauses in the story. But I had to say she put a show on with the different voices for everyone and made the ride so much fun.
This book really does have everything you want in a book, it messes with your mind as you wonder just how far people will go in life to get what they want. This is an entertaining read, you know where you are going with this book, and it keeps you turning the pages over…but seriously what would you do in their position?
Until next time xxx
