Fame is about to get deadly in this terrifying, fresh take on a haunted house thriller. Set in an idyllic Cotswold’s village, rookie paranormal investigator, Megan Forrest, is roped into investigating the strange goings on at the home of Hollywood actor, Ross Huston. Ross and his wife Deborah are convinced that their Victorian mansion is being haunted by the mentally ill patients who resided there in the late nineteenth century. Patients who were brutally treated and murdered at the hands of a cruel doctor.
As Megan investigates ghosts from the past, two women from the present go missing- women who were last seen at the Hustons’ property. Who was the doctor and how is everything connected? Megan finds herself swept up in a dangerous game and with her personal life in shatters, it is a game she can’t escape from. One thing she knows for sure, is that it’s not what everyone thinks and the whole time there is something watching her…
Whenever I read a book, I write some notes on my phone and then post my review later. (I have loads of reviews to get posted before the year is out) However, this book is different, I need to write my review and publish it straight away! I mean I will start off with…
WHAT.A.BOOK!!
Ok disclaimer here, it takes a lot to truly scare me with a book, and I mean a lot. However, I read this book, in the dark and I will admit there were some scenes where I was unsettled and I had to gently put the book down and say, nope not tonight. For me, that is a BIG win! I mean I never wanted to put this book down, I was invested with Megan and her story, whether or not she could really see ghosts and after that shocking left field beginning, I just HAD to know how this would pan out.
I can tell you now I was NOT disappointed, I love Megan and I was worried for her when she was doing wandering around doing solo vigils and everyone knows you don’t go down into a cellar!!!!!! We saw Blind House in 1878 and that was a truly terrifying experience. I mean don’t get me wrong I didn’t want to be there but if I could have climbed into the book quietly and helped the girls I would of. I loved the fact it felt so wrong to be witnessing these heinous crimes. I didn’t want to watch and read what was happening but at the same time, I was compelled to see what would happen. The short answer is nothing ever does in the past. But my GOD this book was just fantastic!
This is a debut book, not that you could tell. It was beautifully written and I was engaged the whole way through. The ensemble of people we meet in the book was written in such a way, you loved them regardless of the fact that some of them were not honest people. I still found myself rooting for them.
What I have to say, I will be one of those people sorry, is that twist! OH MY DAYS! I thought it was cleverly done and so well played. I didn’t see it coming and it was a moment where you had to gasp. I loved the fact the writing leans you to automatically think one thing but then you are so off the mark it’s fricking brilliant! I personally loved it.
As I said before, this is a frigging debut! What a way to start, and the excellent thing is, there will, fingers crossed, be more! I just want to be back with Megan and see what she does next. I will be fighting to be first in line for the next book whenever it drops. It is a series I can totally be on board with. It has scenes where it has you questioning what is real and for those who liked to be chilled, well there is definitely a few of those scenes for you. Seriously I can not stop shouting out about this book, it is a new and refreshing read, Brooke took a plot that may have been done in the past but has brought something new to the table and it works, it absolutely does work! I just LOVED it!!!
Until the next time xxx
