In the golden morning light, a beautiful young woman lies diagonally across the bed, dressed for a night out, her long lashes pressed against her cheeks as if she’s sleeping. But the crimson that creeps across the sheets tells the story of an innocent woman who has drawn her last breath…
Detective Madison Harper is pulled away from Thanksgiving preparations when a local care worker, Terri Summers, is found dead in her home on the outskirts of Lost Creek, Colorado. Terri’s inconsolable mother can’t understand who would hurt such a kind soul who had dedicated her life to helping others. But analysis of the blood spatter at the scene indicates Terri knew her attacker, that she looked them right in the eye before her life was taken.
The awkward way Terri’s body is positioned catches Madison’s attention. Carefully moving her, she finds a bracelet—possibly a child’s—with a single red bead clenched in the woman’s fist, as if she was hiding it. It’s the lead Madison so desperately needs, but the sudden death of one of her own team sends the investigation into a tailspin.
With her coworkers crumbling around her, Madison must work day and night to trace the bracelet and crack the case. But when she’s dragged back into the disappearance of a woman and child from years ago, and finds a link to someone in her own family, can Madison stop this twisted killer before another precious life is taken? And at what cost?
An absolutely addictive and twist-packed crime thriller guaranteed to get your heart racing and make your jaw drop! Perfect for fans of Lisa Regan, Melinda Leigh and Kendra Elliot.
I am not joking when I spent quite a bit of this book crying. It has broken me. A detective thriller, making me cry….well it did.
What.a.story. I have read and loved all Wendy’s books (ok I have still to read) but as you may or not be aware, I have been a HUGE fan basically from the start with her Dean series. *swoon* then she brought Nate into my life as we spent awhile on social media trying to figure out who he might be. I was always worried that I wouldn’t like Nate as much as Dean, or dare I say it, more than Dean but its ok! There is room for both. But this book, in this series, (sorry Dean) is by far my favourite of ALL of Wendy’s books.
For the few days I was bed ridden, I read when I could and I blitzed this book. As I say, I cried at the opening scenes and the third body we find. Well I spent ages internally screaming not to open the door, not to be true. And bam the unthinkable happened.
I seriously can’t handle it, I still won’t accept it. Its not ALLOWED!!!!!!!!!! Then!!!! While Madison is focusing on said murders, Nate is investigating a cold case on behalf of the loveable Vince. Love the friendship of Vince and Nate and cant wait to see more of it.
Angie, the despicable sister of Madison rears her completely ugly grotesque head and we briefly see Kacie from book 3. Angie is back messing with Madison and Nate and I worry for the future.
This book was INTENSE! If I wasn’t lying down I would be in the edge of my seat. I was furiously tuning the pages with the little energy I had as I needed to know what the fricking hell was going on.
Near the end, all I will say, the scene in the police station, well that was it I was bawling like a baby, holding my breath at the realisation at something huge about to happen. And then when it did, I would have dropped to my knees just like one of the characters did. My heart broke and mended and broke so many times.
From the days of Dean, to now, Wendy has become a power house of an author. Her writing is top notch and she will keep you guessing. Subtle hints to question things and then throw a spanner in it all.
This book, as I have said, is my favourite. I love this series so much. Madison and Nate are one of my fav power couple from a Bookouture author. This is definitely one of my top books of the year. I really do not know what else to say about how much I loved this book. It was just fantastic. I never feel any part dragged. We see every aspect of Madison and Nate, the good, the bad, and the dark. We are there wishing them on, hoping that their second chances will lead to places they want to be.
I seriously can not wait for book 5.
Until next time xxx
