Ran McGhie's world has been turned upside down.
A young, lonely and frustrated writer, and suffering from mental-health problems, he discovers that his long-dead mother was related to one of Glasgow's oldest merchant families.
Not only that, but Ran has inherited Newton Hall, a vast mansion that belonged to his great-uncle, who appears to have been watching from afar as his estranged great-nephew has grown up. Entering his new-found home, he finds that Great-Uncle Fitzpatrick has turned it into a temple to the written word - the perfect place for poet Ran.
But everything is not as it seems.
As he explores the Hall's endless corridors, Ran's grasp on reality appears to be loosening.
And then he comes across an ancient lift; and in that lift a mirror.
And in the mirror ... the reflection of a woman ...
A terrifying psychological thriller with more than a hint of the Gothic, House of Spines is a love letter to the power of books, and an exploration of how lust and betrayal can be deadly...

Although Scott Carey doesn’t look any different, he’s been steadily losing weight.
There are a couple of other odd things, too. He weighs the same in his clothes and out of them, no matter how heavy they are. Scott doesn’t want to be poked and prodded. He mostly just wants someone else to know, and he trusts Doctor Bob Ellis.
In the small town of Castle Rock, the setting of many of King’s most iconic stories, Scott is engaged in a low grade—but escalating—battle with the lesbians next door whose dog regularly drops his business on Scott’s lawn.
One of the women is friendly; the other, cold as ice.
Both are trying to launch a new restaurant, but the people of Castle Rock want no part of a gay married couple, and the place is in trouble. When Scott finally understands the prejudices they face–including his own—he tries to help.
Unlikely alliances, the annual foot race, and the mystery of Scott’s affliction bring out the best in people who have indulged the worst in themselves and others.

When you set out for revenge, dig two graves
Growing up in the sleepy English seaside town of Brynston, the fearless five – Ella, Max, Corey, Fallon and Zane – were always inseparable.
Living up to their nickname, they were the adventurous, rowdy kids who lived for ghost stories and exploring the nearby islands off the coast. But when Max’s beloved older sister Jessica is killed, the friendship seems to die with her.
Now years later, only Max and Ella are in touch; still best friends and a couple since they were thirteen.
Their lives are so intertwined Max’s dad even sponsors Ella’s training for the Commonwealth Games. But Ella is hiding things. Like why she hates going to Max’s house for Sunday dinner, and flinches whenever his family are near.
Or the real reason she’s afraid to take their relationship to the next level.
When underdog Corey is bullied, the fearless five are brought back together again, teaming up to wreak havoc and revenge on those who have wronged them. But when the secrets they are keeping can no longer be kept quiet, will their fearlessness be enough to save them from themselves?
The Handmaid's Tale (The Handmaid's Tale, #1) by Margaret Atwood
Goodreads
Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead.
She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read.
She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if their ovaries are viable.
Offred can remember the years before, when she lived and made love with her husband, Luke; when she played with and protected her daughter; when she had a job, money of her own, and access to knowledge.
But all of that is gone now...
Remember 2 may or may not stay, how do you choose?

I love this feature! This week I think you should save The Handmaid’s Tale, it’s a must read. I haven’t read the others but I’m torn between the CJ Skuse and the Michael Malone. I’m interested to see what gets saved. 🙂

Cliche that it may be, I voted for Handmaid’s Tale!
Zoé says
Ha ha why cliche? I am on the fence for this one.
Davida Chazan says
Because “everyone” says it is a “must read” but I’ve read people who hated it. I didn’t read it for years and then when I had surgery on my eyes, and couldn’t read, I listened to it as an audiobook. Spooky, but really good. Just finished watching the 3rd season of the TV series too!
nsfordwriter says
You have to read The Handmaid’s Tale! I mean it’s a landmark kind of book and super famous. It’s not a book I love but I’m glad to have read it.
Zoé says
I will give it a go and hopefully get to it lol x
