The boy studied the bruise turning yellow at the base of his neck. With quick fingers his mother tightened his tie, and pulled his collar high above it. Her eyes alone said, We will not speak of this...
Years later, a man is found shot dead in a local park. On his phone is a draft text: I can’t keep this secret any longer. The recipient is unnamed.
Detective Robyn Carter knows this secret is the key to the case, but his friends and family don’t offer any clues, and all her team have to go on is a size-ten footprint.
Then a woman is found in a pool of blood at the bottom of her staircase, and a seemingly insignificant detail in her stepdaughter’s statement makes Robyn wonder: are the two bodies are connected, and has the killer only just begun?
When another body confirms Robyn’s worst fears, she realises she’s in a race against time to stop the killer before they strike again. But just as she thinks she’s closing in, one of her own team goes missing.
Buried in the past is a terrible injustice. Can Robyn uncover the truth before another life is lost?
One thing you have to love about Carol’s writing is she will go dark! She is not afraid to go there and then some. In the “then” segment of this book, it was tough, some of the scenes, wow I struggled to listen to it and read it. I just wanted to cry and dive into the story.
Not only were these difficult to listen to, but I also spent most of my time getting tied up in knots trying to figure out who these are people!! I changed my mind so many times and I eventually stuck to someone and changed my mind all over again. Carol threw so many spanners at you, head = spinning.
This case is a big confusing pile of spaghetti mess. With one murder victim discovered in their car, in a park, with an unsent message on their phone. We then have another victim, they have been killed in their house but how are they linked? The idea I had was not the reason to what actually linked them, my mind was taking me down a different route. The reasoning behind it, well I did not see coming but it was a clever twist to the sting in the tale.
Shearer, he is melting my heart with each book. I absolutely adore him, he is really a softie! Only Robyn sees it but she thinks he is playing with her, but she really does need to open her eyes. I worry about her because she won’t be opening her eyes anytime soon!! Even though it has been over 2 years now with Davies, he was a huge part of the book. You felt his presence in this story, and if we did, then you can bet your bottom dollar that the team and Shearer felt it. With the hangover from the end of The Missing Girls, I knew that things would not be settled so quickly and now we have further developments and a shady character it just builds on the excitement and the fear of what might be discovered.
I finished this book in a day, yup that is right 1 day! I listened all day and then spent the rest of the evening reading it. I had to find out what was going on and who was who and who was doing what and why were they doing it, just so bittersweet. I wish things could have been different, it just broke my heart. Yet, with that last explosive sentence of the book – that is what I call a mic drop by Carol.
Carol, you have written one twisty story that I feel my head is still twisted up in knots and I can’t unravel it! It is an addictive, engrossing, thrill-seeking ride of a story.
Right, I have to find the strength to read Robyn’s last adventure…
Until next time xxx

Zoe! How can you have got through this so quickly? You are incredible!
Between you and me, this was THE bad boy of the series, in as much as my editor wanted a huge number of changes (a rewrite of 70K words) so by the time the book was ready for publication, I was heartily sick of it. I haven’t read it since the proof edits and then, reading your review, I thought, ‘It actually was a good book’. I’m now going to reread it because as I recall, I made it very twisty indeed *evil laugh*
Thank you for writing this truly wonderful review and for loving Shearer. He really needs Robyn in his life but …
