Magical, spooky and mysterious: welcome to the House on Hoarder Hill...
When Hedy and Spencer start receiving messages on dusty picture frames, Christmas at their grandfather's spooky house turns into a mission to solve the mystery of their grandmother's disappearance. What is their magician grandfather not telling them? With the help of a (talking) mounted stag head, an (also talking) bear rug, and other (currently) disembodied spirits, and against the resistance of gargoyles and ravens, Hedy and Spencer set out to find the truth.
This book is not aimed at me. It’s aimed at middle-grade/young adult readers. And do you know what I say to that, phooey! I adore young adult books, and I adore middle-aged books but not really quite sure of the entire difference, but I love them all. This book was just such a delight for adventure.
I saw this book when I was in the library with my mini-me, she was picking out some books and even though I have a towering TBR read list, I decided what the hell let’s get some books out. This was one of the books I chose. We then sat and read for 30 minutes when we got home.
I think in that time I reached page 72 and that was it, I was hooked. I loved Hedy, I loved Spencer. I loved the mystery around the house, what happened to their grandma, and the fact that grandpa John was a typical grandpa, with his rules.
Stan and Doug were a real hoot for me. I adore their friendship and I adored the way they were with the kids. Then the adventure within the house. From the clues that they got from people, and around the house to solve. Just the whole magic. I mean, this is gonna sound really corny because it’s a book about magic and magicians but to me, this book was magic.
It was a lovely way to escape for a while. I’m so glad there’s a second book and now a third too! I can’t wait to see what happens to Hedy and Spencer, especially after the ending that I just read. With this being written by two different authors, I couldn’t tell you who wrote what as everything just flowed seamlessly and it kept me flitting through the pages as quickly as I could. The tension and excitement I felt it all!
I just absolutely loved it, this is definitely going to be one of my top books this year. No shadow of a doubt it was. This would be perfect for the people is aimed at who love magic, who love intrigue, and who want to go on an adventure because this is an adventure and you know for a 30-something woman, I loved it every step of the way.
I loved the adventure. I loved being there with Hedy and Spencer, I loved meeting the ghost Simon, and what happened when they’re touched by a ghost and you know, the twists with other characters and there were also a few intense moments, especially with Albert nobody. That’s all I’m gonna say about him. I love Mrs. Powell and her wall of hands. They were quite unreal, and I just wish this could be real. Everything in this book was just…just amazing.
Until next time xxx
