Ten beds adorned one of the bedrooms. They were perfectly made, uniform, nothing personal, no personal belongings; ready for one child to leave and another to arrive. Amalie was guided to a bed in the corner; an unopened toothbrush, toothpaste, and a small bar of soap sat on her pillow.
‘How many members of staff are there?’ her guardian asked.
‘We have four members of staff. Each takes it in turns to work around the clock.’ She said it like she was proud that so few staff could tender that many children.
The building had lost its grand splendour. A mansion it must have once been, but all that remained was a mansion that once had shone under the sun and was now chipped, broken, dark, and beyond repair.
The scratch marks on the walls were like those of a rabid animal that tried to claw its way out, the windows were broken, and old broken dolls lay on the floor with heads torn away from their bodies. The walls had lost their colour, every step creaked through the shadow-filled hallways, and the children whispered cruel words.
