Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?
Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her, and her professional life is going nowhere. Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.
Summoned to Evelyn’s luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the ‘80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn’s story nears its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.
Oh my god, I am broken, in love, and can’t stop crying. I love this book! I had no idea how it was going to end or what direction we were going to go in but I didn’t guess this. And then when we found out the link to Monique that was it for me – I was broken again.
I won’t tell you anything about the story as I went in completely and utterly blind. This story is about true love and survival. The true love of Evelyn and it was beautiful, raw, intense and just beautiful. I was in love. I really don’t know what to say about the book. I can’t express how much I truly loved this book.
I buddy read this book and we both agreed how tragic this love story was, but how addictive it is for the reader. Evelyn was not a bad person, despite what she might think, she always tried to protect the people around her. She did it in the only way she thought was possible at the time and used her “assets”, what men and women both wanted and sadly it just didn’t always work out the way she wanted.
I think this will cause me a book hangover, as I want to delve back into the past with Evelyn again and make it the world she wanted.
Right, I need a tissue…
Until the next time xxx
