"A book of the year!" –Buried in a Book
"This book is not for the faint of heart. It's deliciously dark and gruesome." –Where the Reader Grows
"All you girls were less than human. Playthings in a twisted doll house."Olivia is taken from the sidewalk near her college and thrown into a van. Her captors, who she soon discovers are vile, sadistic monsters, abuse her immediately, both mentally and physically.
Then she is taken into a house, into a locked room, where everything is cotton candy pink.
The pink furniture is designed with rounded edges and corners bolted to the floor, and the seams at the bolts melted. This is where the nightmare begins.
She is now a part of their collection.
While disturbing in nature and horrific at times, John Hunt has created a masterpiece psychological thriller, full of suspense.
Olivia makes heroines of similar genre books pale in comparison. She is one of the bravest you'll ever meet and her story will move you.
I have to take a moment with this book! I was so on edge with this book, I was living the fear that Olivia was. Oh my days amount of times my heart was in my throat. The dark and twisted minds of these characters, left me with a sense of unease long after I had finished the book!
From the beginning it held me, it was soft, but you knew something was building, and I was on edge straight away. The vivid descriptions by John meant that reading this book when I was eating my lunch was not the best move, word of advice…don’t. It was violent, but not gratuitously it was more to emphasise the depraved actions of the Gorilla and the Jackal. It fully emphasised how wicked they were. The contrasting behaviours are just chilling to the core and just makes it more terrifying to be in Olivia’s position.
But what I appreciated, is we saw multiple perspectives throughout. Harry’s point of view, Olivia’s dad, is sad as we see how her disappearance affects him and the destruction it has caused.
Then about 30% or so, there was a plot twist which took me by surprise and I spent the remainder of the book on high alert. I didn’t fly through this book because I needed to rest but at the same time, I couldn’t leave Olivia on her own.
I had my suspicions as to who I thought would be behind the mask and I had two suspects, sadly one of them was right. I love that we don’t find out the reasons why. This decision to leave out the motives adds further darkness to the book.
Then that ending… My heart. It is going to leave an impact for a while!
I will admit I found some of the content a bit cringy and in some places a little repetitive, however at the same time, I had to remember who we were dealing with. But kudos to John, this book albeit disturbing was immense and to say I enjoyed it is the wrong word, but I appreciated it. I haven’t read anything so depraved in so long! This was a book I chose to read and it took me twice as long as normal as I have no mojo but I definitely want to read the next installment. Oh, Olivia!!
Until next time xxx
